Why Your Insurance Agent Should Be the First to Know About Life’s Big Changes

Insurance isn’t the most thrilling topic to bring up at your next dinner party. But when life takes a big turn, your insurance coverage could mean the difference between smooth sailing and financial mayhem. That’s why your agent (hi, that’s me!) needs to be one of the first people you call when change comes knocking.

Big life changes = big coverage conversations. Here's why:

What Counts as a “Big Change”?

Here are some common (and not-so-common) life events that should have your insurance agent on speed dial:

  • You bought a new home or moved.New address? That’s a whole new risk profile. Your homeowners or renters insurance needs to reflect your new digs, especially if you’ve moved to a new state, city, or even zip code.

  • You got married or divorced. Changes in marital status can affect everything from auto insurance discounts to life insurance beneficiaries. Don’t leave your ex as the beneficiary on your life policy (yes, it happens more often than you'd think).

  • You had a baby (or adopted one). First, congratulations! Now let’s talk about life insurance. Adding a child to your family is one of the most important reasons to review your coverage. You want to make sure they’re protected, even if the unexpected happens.

  • You started working from home (or opened a home business). If you’ve turned your guest room into an office or are running an Etsy empire from your basement, your homeowners insurance may no longer offer enough coverage. Business equipment, liability concerns, it all adds up.

  • You bought or sold a vehicle. Obvious? Maybe. But some people forget. That fancy new SUV you just drove off the lot? It needs to be added to your auto policy before anything else hits the road.

  • You did major renovations. Finished the basement, added a pool, upgraded your kitchen? These can increase your home’s value (and your risk exposure). If your policy doesn’t reflect the improvements, you could be underinsured.

  • Your teen got a driver’s license. It’s a big milestone but it’s also a big risk factor on your auto insurance. Let’s review your options and make sure you’re properly covered (and finding all possible discounts).

  • You retired. With retirement comes lifestyle changes, maybe you’re driving less, moving to a different state, or downsizing your home. All of these can impact your policies.

Why It Matters

Insurance is based on information. If your agent doesn’t have the most up-to-date details, you might be:

  • Overpaying for coverage you don’t need anymore.

  • Underinsured and vulnerable to major financial loss.

  • Missing out on discounts or bundled savings.

  • Putting your claim in jeopardy because of outdated policy info.

Think of your insurance agent as your coverage coach. We don’t just sell policies, we help you make sure they still fit. Life changes quickly. If your policies don’t keep up, you could be caught with coverage gaps when you least expect it.

Keep It Simple: Just Reach Out

You don’t need to know exactly how your life change affects your insurance because that’s my job. Just keep me in the loop. A quick email or phone call can be enough to start the conversation and make sure your coverage still makes sense.

So, here’s your takeaway:Big life change? Tell your agent.

It’s easy, it’s smart, and it could save you a whole lot of trouble down the road.

And if you’re not sure if something “counts” as a big change, reach out anyway. I’d rather have the conversation and find out you’re good to go than discover later that something fell through the cracks.

Have questions or ready to update your coverage? I’m just a call, text, or email away. Let’s keep your protection as up-to-date as your life.
