Let me paint you a picture: You’re hosting friends for dinner. The table is set, the wine is breathing, the playlist is fabulous. Then, ooops, your neighbor catches the edge of the rug and takes a tumble right in the middle of your living room.

They’re embarrassed, you’re panicked, and suddenly you’re wondering:“Am I covered if someone gets hurt in my house?”

As an insurance agent and someone who has witnessed more than a few “oops” moments, I can tell you this, Yes, your homeowners insurance can help. But there are nuances, and there are steps you can take to prevent these accidents in the first place.

1. Liability Coverage to the Rescue

Your homeowners insurance typically includes personal liability coverage, which is designed for exactly this type of situation. If a guest trips, falls, and gets injured on your property, your policy may help cover their medical bills. If they sue you (yes, even if it’s a friend or neighbor), liability coverage can also help with legal fees.

Most standard policies have liability limits that range from $100,000 to $500,000, and you can add an umbrella policy for even greater protection if needed.

Bottom line? If someone takes a spill in your space and you’re found legally responsible, you’re not necessarily footing the bill alone.

2. Medical Payments Coverage, Even If You’re Not at Fault

Your policy also likely includes something called medical payments to others. This is a no-fault coverage, meaning the person doesn’t have to prove you were negligent. If your neighbor needs stitches or an X-ray after tripping, this coverage might help reimburse them, without any legal drama.

Coverage amounts are usually modest (often around $1,000 to $5,000), but it can go a long way in preserving goodwill and avoiding unnecessary complications.

3. An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth More Than a Deductible

While it’s good to know you’re covered, no one wants a guest to get hurt on their watch. So here’s your ounce of prevention:

  • Secure loose rugs with non-slip backing or double-sided tape.

  • Keep walkways clear of clutter, cords, or wayward dog toys.

  • Fix uneven flooring, broken steps, or loose railings, especially before hosting guests.

  • Salt icy walkways in winter and make sure outdoor lighting works properly.

  • If you have pets or children, make sure they’re not inadvertently creating chaos underfoot.

These small actions can prevent not only physical injuries but also the financial headaches that come with them.

4. Document the Incident, Just in Case

If someone does get hurt, don’t assume they’ll just “walk it off.” Document the scene with photos, take notes about what happened, and check in with the person later. It’s also smart to notify your insurance agent even if a claim isn’t filed immediately. That way, if the situation escalates or medical issues arise down the road, you're ahead of the game.

5. Let’s Talk

As your local insurance agent, I’m here for more than just policies and premiums. I want to make sure your coverage actually covers your life, rug corners, friends with bad knees, wine nights and all.

Let’s schedule a quick policy review and make sure your liability limits are where they should be. I can also walk you through additional coverages like umbrella insurance or ways to prevent claims in the first place.

Because accidents happen and when they do, it’s nice to know you’re covered, and that you took steps to help keep your home safe in the first place.
