I hate to throw a damper on your summer barbeque, but as the days roll by, we are headed further and further into “hurricane season.”

I understand that here in the New York metropolitan area, we are not as concerned with hurricanes as the folks that live in Florida, but we’re not entirely out of the woods, and if you are skeptical, just take a look at this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_York_hurricanes

Fun fact, the list goes back to storms that occurred before 1600.

But I digress.

You can and should start taking steps to protect your home right now, when the

sun is shining and before it is too late.

For instance:

Reinforce Doors and Windows:

One of the first lines of defense against hurricane-force winds is ensuring that your doors and windows are adequately reinforced. Properly securing your windows will help prevent strong winds from penetrating your home and causing extensive damage.

Trim Trees and Secure Outdoor Objects:

Untrimmed trees and loose outdoor objects can become dangerous projectiles during hurricanes, posing a significant threat to your home. This is the time to trim back any overhanging branches and remove dead or weak trees that might fall onto your property. And when the weather gets “iffy,” secure or bring indoors any outdoor furniture, planters, or garden decorations that could be picked up by strong winds.

Inspect and Reinforce the Roof:

The roof is one of the most vulnerable parts of your home during a hurricane. Conduct a thorough inspection to identify and repair any loose or damaged shingles, tiles, or roofing material. Properly securing the roof can prevent it from being torn off by powerful winds, reducing the chances of water and extensive interior damage.

Fortify Home Structure and Foundation:

Ensuring your home's structural integrity is crucial regardless of whether we are in hurricane season or not. Have a professional inspect your foundation for any weaknesses or cracks that could be exacerbated by heavy rains and flooding. If you live in a high-risk area, consider elevating your home on stilts or pilings to protect against storm surges and flooding, something that many people did after Superstorm Sandy.

Develop an Evacuation Plan and Emergency Kit:

In some cases, evacuating your home may be the safest option during a severe hurricane. Familiarize yourself and your family with the designated evacuation routes and plan for where you will go in case of an evacuation order. Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, important documents, and medications. Having a well-thought-out evacuation plan and emergency kit can help ensure the safety of your family during a hurricane.
