I know, I know, it still feels like winter, and depending on where you live, you might even have snow on the ground. But believe it or not, spring is right around the corner, and now is the perfect time to start preparing your home and car for the change in seasons. I promise, a little effort now can save you a lot of time, hassle, and even money down the road.

Winter can be tough on your house, and before the flowers start blooming, there are a few things you should check to make sure your home is in tip-top shape.

Inspect Your Roof and Gutters

Heavy snow, ice, and wind can take a toll on your roof. Look for missing or damaged shingles and get them repaired before spring rains roll in. While you're at it, clean out those gutters. Clogged gutters can lead to water damage and even foundation issues. Trust me, you don’t want to deal with that mess!

Check Your Sump Pump

If you have a basement, your sump pump is your best friend when it comes to preventing flooding. Test it now to make sure it’s in working order before heavy spring rains arrive. Pour a bucket of water into the pit to see if it activates properly. If it doesn’t, you might need a repair or replacement.

Examine Your Windows and Doors

Cold weather can cause cracks or gaps around windows and doors, letting warm air out in the winter and cool air escape in the summer. Sealing any gaps now will improve your home’s energy efficiency and help keep those utility bills in check.

Get Your HVAC System Serviced

Before you switch from heat to air conditioning, schedule an HVAC tune-up. A professional can clean and inspect your system to ensure it runs efficiently and catches any small issues before they become expensive problems.

Declutter and Organize

Spring cleaning isn’t just about dusting and mopping. Now’s a great time to go through closets, garages, and storage areas to clear out things you no longer need. Bonus: If you have items in good condition, donate them to a local charity.

Your car also needs some love after a long winter. Snow, salt, and cold temperatures can cause wear and tear, so a little maintenance now will keep your vehicle running smoothly.

Give Your Car a Thorough Wash

Winter grime, especially road salt, can cause rust and damage your car’s paint and undercarriage. Treat your car to a deep clean, including the underbody, to remove all that winter buildup.

Check Your Tires

Fluctuating temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop, so check and adjust it to the manufacturer’s recommended levels. If you used winter tires, it might be time to swap them out for all-season ones. Also, inspect the tread to make sure they have enough life left in them for safe driving.

Test Your Battery

Cold weather can be tough on car batteries. If your battery is more than a few years old, get it tested to ensure it’s still holding a charge. The last thing you want is to be stranded with a dead battery when you least expect it.

Change Your Wiper Blades and Refill Washer Fluid

Winter can do a number on your windshield wipers. If they’re leaving streaks or making noise, replace them. While you’re at it, top off your windshield washer fluid so you’re ready for those inevitable spring showers.

Get an Oil Change and Check Fluids

If it’s been a while since your last oil change, now is a great time to take care of it. While you're at it, check your coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid levels to make sure everything is in good shape.

You might be wondering, "What does any of this have to do with my insurance?" Well, a well-maintained home and car can actually prevent claims. A leaky roof or clogged gutters can lead to water damage, which can be costly to fix. Regular maintenance on your car can reduce the risk of accidents and breakdowns.

Did you know that some insurance companies offer discounts for things like having a security system in your home or using snow tires in the winter? Now’s a great time to check in with your agent I hope that’s me!) to make sure you’re getting all the discounts available to you.

Spring might not feel imminent, but it’s coming whether we’re ready or not. Taking these simple steps now can save you headaches later and keep your home and car in top shape.
